Indian Companion to D.H. Lawrence

Summary

D.H. Lawrence (885-1930) is a fine yet controversial English novelist, short story writer, poet and essayist. Lawrence comes from a coal mining community of the Midlands, UK. Then he became a great yet controversial writer. Lawrence often drew his themes form his own life and relationships. His major novels include sons and lovers (1913). The Rainbow (1915), Women in Love (1920) and Lady Chatterley’s Lover (1928). He has written many more novels and a great number of short stories. He was a great poet, playwright, travel writer, essayist, critic and painter. Aldous Huxley has edited his letters.

Lawrence was a great critic of the modern civilization. He attacked on man’s concept of race, modernity and war. The Rainbow (1915) trace the sickness of modern civilization to the effects of industrialization upon the human psyche. The Plumed Serpent (1926) was inspired by his fascination with Aztec culture. Lawrence’s writing is notable for its intensity and its erotic sensuality, and several of his works, including Lady Chatterley’s Lover (1928) were banned as obscene. The present companion is a critical monograph on Lawrence’s entire works-fiction, poetry, plays, travel accounts, essays and letters. The book is a great work of survey, study and compilation. The companion aims at educating the Indian readers about D.H. Lawrence.
