Summary

Born on 31st March, 1936, in one scantily populated village, Agar Malwa (Gwalior State now in M.P.), Shri C.M. Gundecha lost his father when he was just a toddler of 18 months. He was subsequently brought up by his mother in yet another small village Sarwar, located on the banks of Kalisindh river in Jhalawar State, now in Rajasthan. To add to his misfortunes his mother too passed away when he was eleven years, leaving him in the care of his sister, who looked after him right upto 18 years. Shri Gundecha has therefore seen – right from his childhood, the worst in life – the worst of misfortunes and tragedies. He has thus become a living testimony to the struggle which one has to put up in a small village of our Country in getting on to one’s feet.

Shri Gundecha after Matriculation joined Government service in 1954 as a teacher when he was just 18 years old. He was married to Smt. Sunder Gundecha in 1956. He however continued with his studies, combining his educational effort with his teaching job – gradually doing his B.A., then B.Ed. then M.A., M.Ed. and subsequently LL.B and LL.M. He became Professor in Law in a Govt. College in 1986. His educational accomplishments remain one solo effort and are today a testimony to his determination to his fixation with the only objective in his life-that of becoming learned. The fact that the society did not offer him much either by way of comfort or support, at times finds expression in his writings – though he stops short of exaggeration his complaint.

While growing up – say for another 25 years Shri Gundecha got a real life-time opportunity to rub shoulders with the poor and to know first hand the desperation of their struggle in making a living. This too keeps on finding expression – from time to time – in his poems. He saw poverty from very close quarters and therefore his heart beats for the poor, more so when he comes face to face with incidents of injustice and high handedness, by the rich and the powerful towards the poor. He also appears worried with the growth of consumerism in society at the cost of human values and also with the growing insensitivities of the young to the deprivation and plight of the poor.

The poems in this collection are in effect outpourings of a heart in agony. They relate to no particular period, having been written many decades back. The reader however may find them interesting in the present context too.
