Thinking Women

An Introductory Reader

Summary
This reader attempts to see the workings of gender in day-to-day lives, the site for complicated gender negotiations. The selection of material is wide ranging in terms of form and content, including creative writings in English and translations from other Indian languages, autobiographical narratives, newspaper articles, theoretical pieces, and a selection of visual material like advertisements and cartoons. The editors have been propelled by a constant attempt to foreground differences and to see how vectors like caste, class, sexuality and religion complicate one's experiences of gender, which open up issues for discussion, and make available different perspectives without offering any neat resolutions. The Reader juxtaposes different voices in such a way that it undermines the subject position of the middle class/upper caste Indian woman, who is the protagonist of mainstream narratives. For instance, in the sub-section titled ‘Becoming Gendered’, an extract from Limbale’s Outcaste is placed alongside an advertisement for Business World and Suniti Namjoshi's fable ‘The Gods’ Most of these texts were published across two decades in various anthologies, novels and journals. Some pieces are taken from an even earlier time—Sojourner Truth’s speech, dates back to the nineteenth century. Each text is preceded by a short note that indicates the general line of argument followed by it, and also provides some information about the author. The larger aim of the book is to engender a different way of reading itself, to provide the readers with tools to conceptualize their ordinary experiences. There are three main Parts: I ‘Girl, Interrupted – Gender, A Journey’; II, ‘And Then They Lived Happily Ever After? Just Relationships’; and III ‘Skin Deep: Writing the Body’. The reader pays attention to the politics of difference, which has been crucial to feminist thought in recent years. The editors present a selection of texts which disturbs the black and white divide between the masculine and the feminine, and looks at how power works in a more diffuse and complicated fashion.
